What is "summary dismissal"?

Summary dismissal is usually when an employee is dismissed "on the spot" because the employer believes, on reasonable grounds, that the employee's misconduct is so serious that is justifies immediate dismissal.  

Employees are usually not paid any amount of money in lieu of notice.

What are some examples of "gross or serious misconduct" that justifies automatic dismissal?

Examples of summary dismissal include (but are not limited to) theft, fraud, violence, intoxication and serious breaches of occupational health and safety procedures (OH&S).
